All about Panch Kedar
Panch Kedar is a Sanskrit term which is used to denote the set of five Hindu pilgrimage centres or temples which are specifically dedicated to Lord Shiva. These temples are located in the Garhwal Himalayan region in #Uttarakhand, India. The historical significance of these temples dates back to the time when the Pandavas’ were in search of Lord Shiva to atone for their sins of killing their brethren during the Kurukshetra war. In order to avoid this meeting, Lord Shiva in order to hide took the form of a bull and started to force himself into the ground. Later, as a result, only his hump was left visible.
However, Lord Shiva was impressed by the willpower and determination of the Pandavas he forgave their sins, blessed them and allowed them to worship him at Kedarnath. Another historical fact which comes forward from this same theory with respect to the Panch Kedar is that the stone-like structure which is worshipped at the Kedarnath temple is the hump of the bull.
While Lord Shiva was hiding here, his arms appeared at the Tungnath Temple, his face at Rudranath Temple, his belly at Madmaheshwar Temple and his locks (hair) with head at Kalpeshwar Temple.
Consequently, the above-mentioned five shrines are now treated as the Panch Kedar since panch in Hindi means five. Out of these temples, the Kedarnath Temple is present at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 ft), the Tungnath Temple is present at an altitude of 3,680 meters (12,070 ft), the Rudranath Temple is present at an altitude of 3,559 meters (11,677 ft), the Madhyamaheshwar Temple or the Madmaheshwar is situated at an altitude of 3,490 meters (11,450 ft) and the Kalpeshwar Temple is at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level (7,200 ft).
These temples are believed to be visited in the exact same order as mentioned above.
I recently had the pleasure of going to Kedarnath and taking the holy blessings of Lord Shiva.
